Although humans are part of nature, human activity is often understood as a separate category from other natural phenomena. This quote reveals the way in which humans take things for granted and then realise its value once it disappears. In the arid conditions of Mumbai, water is viewed as a precious commodity and every single drop of the liquid is considered a miraculous blessing. Dharker uses a combination of literary techniques in order to make first-world readers wonder how much they take for granted in their daily lives.
The poem is an incident of a municipal pipe that bursts in the deprived slums of Mumbai and how people run with mugs and pots to collect the precious liquid. With the use many poetic techniques and literary devices, Imtiaz Dharker tries to emphasise the poverty that these people live in and how rare drinking water is for these people. The penultimate stanza, the longest one which is 11 lines.
